Power of Produce (POP)
Power of Produce (POP) is a nation-wide farmers’ market-based kids program that aims to teach children about produce, our local food system, and healthy food preparation. Kids ages 5 through 12 are eligible to participate in this free program. Upon signing up at the POP booth, each kid will receive a passport which will be stamped after they complete each day’s activity. The passports are kept at the market booth, so you won’t have to worry about finding and bringing your passport each week!
After getting their passport stamped, the kids receive one $2 “buck” that they can spend on any fruit, vegetable, or food-producing plant at the market. These bucks are what make the POP program truly exciting. The kids can visit produce vendors and decide for themselves what they want to spend their buck on.
Another exciting feature of POP is the Two-Bite Club, which will take place once a month at the market. During this activity, kids are rewarded for taking two bites of the featured fruit or vegetable, such as rutabaga, fava beans, and salmonberries. This encourages kids of try a produce item that might be unfamiliar to them or that they would otherwise shy away from. They might even choose to spend them $2 reward on it!
Here are some other POP activities to look forward to this summer:
Produce stamping with peppers, okra, carrots, and other seasonal veggies
Make a real Mr. Potato Head
Corn husk dolls
Plant a seedling and decorate the pot
Make a produce necklace
If you’re interested in having your kid be a part of the POP Club, make sure to visit the kids booth on June 2nd, and we’ll set them up with a passport!
