Frequently Asked Questions

faq_1The Hillsdale Farmers’ Market was organized in 2002 to create a farmers market in the Hillsdale neighborhood of SW Portland. The market is recognized as a 501(c)4 nonprofit organization by the Internal Revenue Service.

When are you open?

The market is open on Sundays 10am-2pm. The market runs weekly May through the Sunday before Thanksgiving and twice monthly December through April. The 2010-2011 dates are:

May 2 through Nov 21
Dec 5, 19
Jan 9, 23
Feb 6, 20
Mar 6, 20
April 3, 17

Do you allow dogs in the market?

Currently we allow leashed pets in the market during the winter season, December through April. A simple rule of thumb: no pets when the market runs weekly. Please note that Oregon Dept of Agriculture rules prohibit animals (except service animals) from entering a vendors booth.

Are you really outside in the winter?

Yes we are. We just bundle up and drink a lot of coffee, tea and hot cider. Handwarmers come in handy too.

Do you allow crafts in your market?

No, we consider ourselves an agricultural market. By that we mean that the vendors sell agricultural products, seafood, nursery products (plants, trees, bulbs, etc) and prepared foods. All items must be grown, raised, harvested, created or produced in Oregon or Washington. We do allow a few craft vendors to attend in the two December markets.

How can I become a vendor?

First you must meet our basic requirement: everything offered for sale at the Hillsdale Farmers Market must be grown, harvested, produced or in some way created in Oregon or Washington. You also must have all the proper licenses in place before you come to the market. Don’t know what you licenses you need? The Food Safety Division (link) of the Oregon Department of Agriculture is the place to look.

We use the Manage My Market (link) web-based application system. If you are not already registered on that site, you should do so as soon as possible. Nearly all the markets in the Portland area are using this system as well. Our application period is in February. We have a strong group of vendors and there are usually very few spots available for brief periods in the spring and late fall.
