It sounds strange calling this Sunday’s market a “winter” market given the weather forecast but this Sunday is the last winter market session. We return to the weekly schedule next week. The market will run weekly from May 2nd through November 21st.

We have two new vendors this week Petal Heads and Think Unique Gardens. They each have a unique variety of perennials and other plants. Stop by their stalls this Sunday.

There is a lot going on in Hillsdale this weekend. Food Front has holding its Market Sunday event and Rieke Elementary is holding its annual Art Fair. You can read more about both events below. Given the extra activity especially near Rieke, the parking lots will likely be crowded. There is plenty of parking near the football stadium and pool. If you drive to the market, enter at the Capitol Hwy entrance and park there.

Finally, it’s the 4th Sunday of the month which means that Master Gardeners will be at the market to answer your questions.

See you Sunday,

Eamon Molloy
Market Manager

What’s Coming To The Market This Week?

There will be greens galore this week – spinach, miner’s lettuce, kale, chicories, and more. Other spring vegetables like asparagus, radishes, rhubarb, fiddlehead ferns, morels and nettles will be readily available too. Root vegetables will be plentiful including spring onions and leeks. As for fruit, there will be plenty of apples and pears and dare I say it, greenhouse grown strawberries.

Kookoolan Farms returns to the market this month. They will have fresh chicken ($4.25/lb) and frozen heritage chicken ($5/lb) for sale. Kookoolan is also taking orders for Bourbon Red Thanksgiving turkeys and for custom-processed beef, pork, and lamb.
As for other meats, Draper Girls will have plenty of lamb and goat. Pine Mountain Ranch will have a good supply of bison and chicken while Sweetbriar Farms will have plenty of pork. Greenville Farms, Jacobs Creamery, Pine Mountain Ranch and Sweetbriar Farms will all have eggs. Linda Brand Crab returns this week with crab and other seafood. Columbia River Fish will have salmon and Wild Oregon will have a variety of seafood.

Cooking Ideas -Spinach Nudi

Many things show up on Twitter, recipes included. @cookbook (link) is one of my favorite people to follow. This recipe is adapted from one posted a while ago. Nudi are basically ravioli filling, or nude ravioli. You can serve them with tomato sauce or with butter and grated Parmesan. You can even use them as substitutes for meatballs in a pasta and meatball dish. You can find the recipe here (link). Enjoy!
