I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving. We are now on our twice monthly winter schedule. The winter dates are: December 6, 20 January 10, 24 February February 7, 21 March 7, 21 April 11, 25.

This Sunday is the Annual Holiday Market and Chili Feed. We will have craft vendors in the market this Sunday (and December 20th) and the Hillsdale Business and Professional Association will be conducting a chili feed near Food Front. School groups will be performing at both locations. Donations to the chili feed will be forwarded to the participating school groups. With a chance of flurries this Sunday, it could really be a winter holiday event!

See you on Sunday,

Eamon Molloy
Market Manager

What’s Coming To The Market This Week?

It may get pretty cold over the next few days so some of the more tender crops like lettuce may be in limited supply. Hardy greens like kale, chard, and the chicories should be fine. Other winter crops – broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, sunchokes, parsnips, celeriac – will all be readily available. Several farms with greenhouses and cold frames will also have limited supplies of peppers, zucchini, cucumbers and tomatoes. As for fruit, apples, cranberries, pears and asian pears will be readily available as will walnuts, hazelnuts and chestnuts. Winter squash will be readily available.

Linda Brand Crab and all the other crabbers are having a great start to the crab season. Pine Mountain Ranch will have a good supply of bison and chicken while Sweetbriar Farms will have plenty of pork. Draper Girls should have lamb and goat as well. As for eggs, Greenville Farms, Jacobs Creamery, Pine Mountain Ranch and Sweetbriar Farms will have eggs.

Check the availability list (link) for the complete list of who’s coming this weekend and what they expect to be selling. The list is posted Thursday afternoon and updated through the weekend. For Sunday morning updates, check Twitter feed either on our website sidebar or on our Twitter page (link).

Cooking Ideas – Potato Latkes

With Hanukkah fast approaching, it’s time to make latkes. (Actually I would gladly eat latkes anytime of the year!) They really aren’t that hard to make. Messy, perhaps but not difficult. There are two tricks to successful latkes. First, make sure the oil is hot. The test piece should sizzle immediately. Second, be sure to blend the starch back into the mixture before squeezing the liquid out of the pancake. You can find the recipe here (link). Enjoy!

Nourishing Neighbors

Helping Neighbors In Need

A note from a local group helping the hungry in our neighborhoods

Nourishing Neighbors was started almost a year ago when a group of people volunteered to do a food canvas in the Hillsdale area on Martin Luther Day. We donated the food collected to Neighborhood House, and it was then that we realized that the need to contribute would be ongoing given the state of financial difficulty that this country has been experiencing.

Nourishing Neighbors was started to try and help with that need. We have been at the Hillsdale Farmers Market with a table throughout the summer and fall months and one of our volunteers is often at Food Front, smiling, educating and taking collections on behalf of the Neighborhood House. We would like to continue with our presence at the Farmers Market as well as at Food Front. We are looking for more volunteers at to help with this effort. We are also looking for more participants in a Food Canvas on MLK Day Monday (18 January 2010).

We will be at the Farmers Market Dec 6th and Dec 20th collecting food and donations. Stop by our table and find out how you can help.
