Looks like we have another nice weekend coming up. There is a lot of produce coming in this week. If you have freezer space, you might want to stick a few pints of berries in the freezer. Then in February, you can make smoothies and think about the summer to come.

As a reminder, I-405 is closed in both directions this weekend for repaving. You’ll need to take alternate routes if you normally use 405 to get to the market.

See you on Sunday!

What’s Coming To The Market This Week?

The variety of fruit coming in this week is almost overwhelming. Apples, peaches, nectarines, apricots, figs, plums, melons, berries – there is something for everyone. Raspberries will be limited but blueberries, blackberries and strawberries should be readily available. Peaches will be plentiful. As for melons, there will be watermelons, cantaloupes, honeydews and more.

Corn, tomatoes and peppers will be plentiful this weekend. There will be many pepper varieties including bell, poblanos, Anaheims, padron and habanero. Other available vegetables include eggplants, green beans, summer squash, kohlrabi, cabbage, cucumbers, spinach and a lot more.

Check the availability list for the complete list of who’s coming this weekend and what they expect to be selling. The list is posted Thursday afternoon and updated through the weekend. For Sunday morning updates, check Twitter feed either on our website sidebar or on our Twitter page.

Cooking Ideas – Flatbread Pizza

We have a guest columnist this week. Cristin Couzens is a regular market shopper and blogger at The Weekly Veggie.

My parents hail from the South and carted us there for vacations from my childhood home in Massachusetts. I remember the water towers painted like peaches with a dark stripe representing the indentation that made my brother and I giggle in the back of our powder blue station wagon. Peach nirvana was achieved standing by the car, sinking my teeth in so deep I achieved a seal-lock, after successful implementation of ‘Operation Let’s Nag Our Parents Until They Pull Over At The Roadside Peach Stand.’ When I moved to Portland, I was relieved to find bountiful sources of local peaches that rival even the sweetest Georgia peach.

Clearly, I have no problem with eating fruit. It’s veggies that I’m suspicious of, though I’m trying hard to expand my repertoire. When I find a recipe that features my favorite fruit, and incorporates veggies — sign me up! If you can resist immediately eating the peaches coming to the market this week, try them in this recipe for Farmers Market Flat Bread Pizza. My friend, Amit Kobrowski of Relish Catering and Party Planning known for his fabulous pizzas, graciously permitted me to share this recipe with you. You can see more of his work at www.relishportland.com After collecting your peaches, pick up some of the plentiful red peppers, and a bunch of arugula. And if you haven’t tried goat cheese from the market, here’s your chance! You can find the recipe here.
